What is the esoteric meaning behind the "Serpent's Apron" in the Masonic Lodge?

There isn't any, as no such thing exists.

But wait, it sorta does exist, let me explain...

The three degrees of Freemasonry are very solemn, serious, sober affairs imparting moral lessons on the candidate. Over the years, many Lodges developed "4th degrees", usually held about once a year and including all new Master Masons who were made that year. They usually amount to something of a camping trip with a bit of drunken tomfoolery thrown in. Some are quite simple, others more elaborate with a bunch of mock ceremony and the like. Each region, and sometimes even individual Lodges- made up their own names and traditions. In the forested region of the Eastern U.S., "Woodsman Degree" was a popular name. "Plainsmen, or Pioneer Degree" in the Mid-West, and in the Southwest, "Snake, or Serpent Degree" became a common name. (See, the names often reflect something about the region.)

A "Serpent's Apron" is just a prop used in such an event, and has no special meaning beyond that. The whole affair is largely a farce. Very few Lodges do these events anymore. Lack of interest mostly, but too there were instances of some Lodges taking the shenannigans too far leading some areas to prohibit the events.

Could it be something else? Sure, Freemasonry, as well as organizations related to it are very different region to region. Some Lodge or related club somewhere else could have some entirely different use of or meaning behind something they call a serpents apron. But such things have no meaning to Masonry on whole and would hold no symbolic or esoteric meaning or use beyond that local tradition.

So while there is no meaning behind such a thing to "THE" Masonic Lodge (Masonry in general) it may or may not have a meaning to "A" (individual) Masonic Lodge.

Masonic Dragons over London.
